THE NINTH GATE

With Johnny Depp, Lena Olin, Frank Langella, Emmanuelle Seigner, James Russo
Directed by Roman Polanski

With a couple of decades lapsing since Polanski made the controversial
Rosemary’s Baby, he once again investigates the dark arts and the devil. Depp plays a rare book dealer who is approached by an occult expert who wants him to authenticate a legendary book on the subject. There are only three known in existence, and the man wants to know whether his copy is the original – no price is too high. Our unscrupulous dealer travels to Europe but soon discovers he may have bit off more than he could chew as he is followed and people start turning up dead. Depp does a good job (as he usually does) while both Olin and Seigner are sensuous without really having to try. A deliciously evil mystery.
