PROM NIGHT

With Brittany Snow, Johnathon Schaech, Scott Porter, Kellan Lutz, Dana Davis, Jessica Stroup, Ming-Na

Written by J.S. Cardone
Directed by Nelson McCormick

As part of the ‘80s slasher remake flood of recent years, Prom Night comes in as a not-too-terrible installment. Having seen everything from Friday The 13th, Halloween, and The Funhouse, to My Bloody Valentine, The Burning and Nightmare on Elm Street at the time, admittedly I never caught the original Prom Night. I must say, its sequel title of Hello Mary Lou Prom Night II sounded dumb enough for me to avoid the first one!
With Prom Night it is not a case of a senseless masked killing machine or a who-done-it mystery behind the slaughter. The perpetrator in question is an obsessed school teacher who killed Donna’s family three years ago. He was locked away, but on her prom night celebration at a posh hotel, he makes his return, killing anyone who comes in the way of his plan to have them together forever.
For the most part it goes through much of the same well-worn motions one would come to expect of a stalking, knife wielding killer, but it has more of a twisted psychological love-story at its core than a body count and creative death exercise.

Special Features: a commentary track by director McCormack and cast (Snow & Schaech); several featurettes incl. a making-of, a killer profile and a look at the gothic feel of the hotel location; real prom stories from the cast; blooper reel; and a brief, but not very different alternate ending.
