Resident Evil Afterlife RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE (3D)

With Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller, Boris Kodjoe, Kim Coates, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Sienna Guillory

Written by Paul W.S. Anderson (based on characters created for the Capcom Resident Evil video games)

Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson

For the fourth chapter in Anderson's movie adaptations of the popular video game franchise, he went the 3D route, also shifting into the directors' chair again. This is one of the few times that this technology actually gets well utilized to the max, with shots and scenes specifically written for this purpose.

Picking up after the Extinction chapter, Alice still aims to destroy the evil Umbrella corporation and unleashes an onslaught on their fortress with several of her clones. But her super-powers get nutralized and a key villain escapes.

The world is almost over-run by T-virus infected zombies. Alice is drawn towards a radio signal promising refuge at a place called Arcadia, and ends up tracking down Claire, but she's in a terrible state. Heading towards the Arcadia signal, Alice crash lands a plane on what used to be a high security prison where some survivors are surrounded by tens of thousands of zombies. Here she encounters a ragtag bunch, not all to be trusted. Together they must find a way out, and have to decide whether to include a killer who may have the answer. In their bloody and action packed fight for survival many new and nasty creatures crawl from the darkness. And, Alice also come face to face with some Umbrella villains with major ass-kicking and firepower erupting.

Some game characters and creatures make an admirable turn, while the head villain Wesker is (unfortunately) a bit too Matrix Mr. Smith.

Afterlife is a total blast featuring one of cinema's most enduring female action heroines, rearing for another chapter.

Alas, the South African DVD release of Afterlife is not in 3D.
Extras include featurettes on the
4th installment of this exciting zombie / action franchise ; a filmmaker commentary track for more insight into this phenomenon ; plus a look at the next chapter, Damnation.
