HORRORFEST REPORT #1 (26 October 2007)
Thursday evening a decent batch of Horror fans came out for the CAPTIVITY sneak preview to kickstart the S.A. HORRORFEST!
The first of the wide Halloween gift variety was spread liberally.

HORRORFEST REPORT #2 (27 October 2007)
Friday evening the locally made short film collection (SHADOW REALM Vol. III: Part 1) was a sold out show! In fact many people had to be turned away, even after extra chairs were taken into the theatre!
Viewers scored cool stuff like DVDs (including THE DESCENT, signed by its director, make-up FX artist, director of photography, production designer and two of the actors!).
PlayStation T-shirts, horror posters, Piranha energy drinks, Something Wicked Magazines as well as a poster of UNDEAD (signed by its Australian directors) were bagged by the lucky audience.
In the foyer official HORRORFEST and other related T-shirts were on sale (as it will be throughout the festival). From Saturday, Horror DVDs will also be on sale.
Thus far the festival just gets better and better each year!
Thanks to all who came out, those who will return for more cool movies, and others who still plan to make it.

HORRORFEST REPORT #3 (28 October 2007)

While it seemed as though most Capetonians chose to head to the beach on a brilliant Saturday afternoon, the hardcore horrorfans made the better choice and head to the Labia for some cracking cool flicks, like THE WITCHES HAMMER, and scoring a bunch of killer horror goodies.
Even the late show had a stack of viewers pull in for the unique experience of the Pakistani-made ZIBAHKHANA.
Outside the Labia Theatre the PlayStation Pod was loaded with Horror flavoured PS2 games to keep the punters occupied.
Sunday offers up the classic Bela Lugosi movie WHITE ZOMBIE at 4pm, while the original ALIEN will burst onto the big screen at 8:30pm, preceded by the documentary H.R. GIGER's SANCTUARY on the Swiss artist who designed the Alien creature.
Don't miss out!

HORRORFEST REPORT #4 (29 October 2007)
Sunday 28 October was another great day of thrills and chills, with a surprising amount of Bela Lugosi fans coming out for WHITE ZOMBIE, while the double feature of ALIEN and the documentary H.R. GIGER's SANCTUARY packed the house.
With another 4 days of Horror remaining, it's far from over! Tonight (29 Oct) you can catch the four chapter flick TALES FROM BEYOND and another Dario Argento classic TENEBRAE (aka Unsane).
A blood-drenched thanks to all the supporters coming out thus far!

HORRORFEST REPORT #5 (30 October 2007)
Well, while we didn't screen Gremlins at the HORRORFEST, they decided to slip in and cause some minor havoc during the screening of TALES FROM BEYOND, but it was sorted without too much trouble.
A serious batch of Horror fans came out on a windy Cape Town evening for both TALES and Dario Argento's TENEBRAE. We're impressed!
Please take a look at the picture gallery for an example of some of the shirts available in the Labia Theatre foyer during HORRORFEST screenings (or e-mail us for info to order. Any design can be produced for you - info@flamedrop.com).
Things are looking good for the live soundtrack event on Halloween night (Wed 31 Oct) with members of LARK, TERMINATRYX as well as THE CRACKPOT REALIST!
Book at the Labia Theatre (021 424 5927) or come early to avoid losing out.
Tonight: STUPID TEENAGERS MUST DIE! and SLIPKNOT!

HORRORFEST REPORT #6 (31 October 2007)
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Tuesday evening those attending the S.A. HORRORFEST were treated to a lashing of cheese with the tongue in cheek STUPID TEENAGERS MUST DIE! while SLIPKNOT blew their hair way back, the free CDs (from Gresham & RoadRunner) further adding to the impact, together with PlayStation T-shirts, horror posters and DVDs from Sting and Ster Kinekor.
Tonight is of course the big one, conveniently falling on Halloween Night. Members of LARK and TERMINATRYX, as well as THE CRACKPOT REALIST will be breathing new life into an all time classic, the 1919 silent film THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI. An ecclectic original soundtrack will be performed to the screening of this historic German movie. Booking is essential (Labia Theatre: 021 424 5927).
The audience is encouraged to dress in their interpretation of Halloween / Horror / Freaky, and the top 3 chosen viewers will walk off with Hostel II slingbags loaded with great stuff, from Horror DVDs and T-shirts, to Gothic gear and jewelry from Plastic-Bat.co.za, Halloween stuff and PlayStation goodies.
This is not to be missed. T-shirts on sale in the foyer.
Tomorrow night the HORRORFEST closes with the documantary on Italian Horror, HANGING SHADOWS, and the Spaghetti Western meets Horror, LEFT FOR DEAD.

Blog review by Something Wicked Magazine Editor Joe Vaz - Saturday, November 17, 2007:

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Having missed last year's HORRORFST Finale of Terminatryx and Lark's original, live soundtrack to Nosferatu, I made damn sure I didn't miss this year's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. I'd only ever seen snippets of the film on YouTube and, like all 70+ year old black and white silent movies it looks cheesy, corny and quite silly. But all that changed on the 31st of Oct 2007. Watching a classic like Caligari in a darkened theatre with a live 21st Century soundtrack suddenly brings back the scale of this picture.

What a fucking masterpiece - instead of giggling at the screen I found myself suddenly entranced. Hanging on every (written) word. The score, composed and performed by Paul and Sonja from Terminatryx, Sean and Fuzzy from Lark, and The Crackpot Realist was beautifully pieced together, altogether haunting and kickass with a combination of acoustic and electronic sounds with vocal contortions supplied by Sonja and one of The Crackpot Realist's collaborators. What they manage to achieve is to completely revitalise this classic.

For the first time I found myself completely enthralled by a silent movie - marvelling at the stylistic approach to the film making, finding the obvious inspirations of such great genre directors as Tim Burton and Sam Raimi.
With their soundtrack they managed to make classic breathe again, resurrecting it for a new generation of film-makers to marvel at the magic of silver screen.
I can't wait for next year's!

HORRORFEST REPORT #7 (1 November 2007)
The live soundtrack performance to the screening of the 1919 silent classic THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI by members of TERMINATRYX, LARK as well as THE CRACKPOT REALIST was an absolute blast. The sold out Labia Theatre burst at the seams with dozens of extra seats having to be brought in! Apologies to all of the people who couldn't get tickets and had to be turned away.
Even with some technical difficulties (like TV monitors necessary for the musicians facing the audience to see where their cues are) going off-line, the show went off smoothly.
Thanks so much to everyone who turned up.
The short film winners were also announced. The winner of the VISUAL IMPACT / HD HUB production package worth R17 500 goes to THE MAMTSOTSI BIRD directed by Jo Horn, with the Best S.A. Music Video going to INSEK's Terug Van Die Dood (directed by Vos).
Tonight is the final push of the 2007 S.A. HORRORFEST! The last two treats include the documentary on Italian horror, HANGING SHADOWS, and the Spaghetti Western Horror film LEFT FOR DEAD. It is far from over and the last of the give-aways still need homes.
See you there!

HORRORFEST REPORT #8 (2 November 2007)
And so another week of Horrific treats across Halloween season comes to an end. Those who made the effort to come out had a great time, treated to many big screen premiers, African debut's, old classics, music, games, loads of Halloween give-aways, and more.
This was the biggest and best S.A. HORRORFEST thus far, each year notching it up more & more.
We'll be getting started on the 2008 festival soon and plan to make it even more exciting, further expanding the Horror reach. But before that, expect another peripheral festival of extremnes on the big screen! - stay tuned for details...

A big thanks to to everyone attending, sponsors, partners, press and all assiting in making it a
blast.

SEE YOU NEXT YEAR!

a week+ of horror on the big scream
