South

HORRORFEST
WRAP-UP
&
SHORT
FILM
WINNERS
|
The
2008
South
African
HORRORFEST
closed
with
a
bang
to
a
packed
theatre
for
the
third
part
of
the
SHADOW
REALM
Short
Film
Collection.
It
was
followed
by
the
short
film
awards
ceremony.
We’re
overjoyed
that
each
year
we
get
more
entries
from
all
over
the
world
and
that
the
standard
keeps
getting
better
(making
it
that
much
more
difficult
for
us
to
decide
on
winners!)
–
but,
as
cliché
as
it
may
seem,
we
see
everyone
as
winners,
not
just
by
having
their
movies
included
in
the
line-up
for
the
audience
to
enjoy
(or
get
creeped-out
by!),
but
that
you
actually
got
up
and
went
through
the
arduous
and
often
strenuous
task
of
making
them.
And
those
who
did
not
get
selected,
many
factors
had
to
be
taken
into
account,
and
it
doesn’t
mean
your
movie
is
not
worthy
or
that
you
should
not
continue
to
submit
them
to
the
S.A.
HORRORFEST.
Where
possible,
we
will
include
them
in
other
cinematic
ventures
like
our
X
Fest
Film
Festival.

HÄXAN
(The
Witch)
-
Live
Soundtrack
Performance
Friday
31
October
(Halloween
Night)
Two
shows
only
-
7:15pm
&
9:15pm
(R40)
This
superb
1922
silent
classic
directed
by
Benjamin
Christensen
was
chosen
for
the
customary
HORRORFEST
live
soundtrack
performance.
With
the
popularity
of
these
performances
outgrowing
the
size
of
the
theatre,
this
year
will
see
2
shows
for
Häxan
on
Halloween
night
(as
too
many
disappointed
viewers
had
to
be
turned
away
last
year
when
it
sold
out).
Häxan
was
decades
ahead
of
its
time,
and
so
amazingly
executed,
from
the
cinematography,
to
the
special
effects.
With
a
blend
of
dramatization,
historic
artwork
and
documentary-style
depiction,
Christensen
delved
into
the
phenomenon
of
witchcraft
with
the
bold
depiction
of
rituals,
the
satanic
Sabbat,
inquisition
&
torture,
possessed
nuns,
and
the
general
misconceptions
that
led
to
the
murder
of
millions
of
innocent
people
falsely
accused
of
practicing
witchcraft.
This
movie
pretty
much
ruined
Christensen’s
career
as
the
world
wasn’t
ready
for
such
daring
filmmaking.
Paul

VAMPIRA
The
Movie
Sunday
2
November
–
8:30pm
(R25)
In
this
long
overdue
documentary,
the
moviemakers
focus
on
the
highly
interesting
life
of
the
first
ever
Horror
TV
Hostess,
Vampira
(aka
Maila
Nurmi).
It
chronicles
her
life,
career,
friends
(who
included
James
Dean
&
Marlon
Brando),
her
cult
status
and
more.
While
very
reclusive,
the
moviemakers
managed
to
get
some
extensive
interviews
with
her.
Sadly
this
timeless
icon
passed
away
shortly
after
the
movie
was
completed.
Also
features
Sid
Haig,
Bill
Moseley,
Forrest
J.
Ackerman,
Jerry

(Elvira).
Music
by
