Penny Dreadful 1

PENNY DREADFUL Season 1

With Reeve Carney, Timothy Dalton, Eva Green, Rory Kinnear, Josh Hartnett, Billie Piper

Written & Directed by John Logan

Set in Jack The Ripper-era Victorian London, a wealthy explorer's daughter has disappeared, taken by a mysterious and deadly supernatural creature (with a penchant for blood, wink-wink!). In his quest to find her, along with his daughter's childhood friend (a medium with powers and secrets of her own), he recruits a formidable team to retrieve her - including a sharp shooting charlatan and a doctor obsessed with resurrecting the dead.

All manner of classic villain, beast, monster and historic horror character (from Frankenstein and Dorian Gray to Van Helsing) get craftily incorporated here for one highly satisfying series that is both well-written and executed, not shying away from adult themes.

Great period production design and locations set the scene well, with a gritty sense of horror.
I for one am looking forward to the second season!

PS. The title comes from the nickname given to the tacky pulp fiction style weekly British publications dealing with horrible subjects (costing a penny).
